Power struggles begin when dating becomes a battle over who gets the final word, who controls decisions or whose needs matter most. A relationship is not a courtroom where one person must defeat the other. Healthy love creates room for two people to communicate, understand and grow together. “Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.” Proverbs 13:10 KJV
Break the cycle by learning to disagree without attacking each other’s character. Listen before responding, communicate your concerns clearly and stop using silence, threats, withdrawal or manipulation to gain control. You do not have to dominate someone to be heard.
Power struggles often reveal deeper issues such as insecurity, fear of rejection, pride or unresolved wounds from previous relationships. Are you trying to solve the issue, or are you simply trying to win the argument?
For singles who are dating, pay attention to how both of you handle disagreement before considering marriage. Can you make decisions together? Can you apologize without keeping score? Can you express your needs without making the other person feel powerless?
Restoring love order means replacing control with cooperation and pride with humility. When two people submit their relationship to Christ and allow the Holy Spirit to teach them how to love, disagreement does not have to become warfare. Love can remain strong even when both people see things differently.
